Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has assured Ghanaians that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration will be peaceful, stressing that the party has no intention of disrupting public order.
Speaking ahead of the demonstration scheduled for today, Thursday, August 6, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the protest is intended to draw attention to what the NPP describes as growing concerns over the rule of law, constitutional governance and democratic accountability in the country.
“We don’t intend to be lawless,” the Minority Leader stated, emphasizing that the party remains committed to conducting the demonstration within the confines of the law and in accordance with Ghana’s democratic principles.
The demonstration is expected to attract thousands of party supporters, executives and sympathisers from across the country. Participants are scheduled to assemble at the forecourt of the Supreme Court in Accra before embarking on a peaceful march through some principal streets of the capital.
As part of the exercise, the NPP leadership is expected to present petitions to both the Supreme Court and the Presidency. The petitions will outline the party’s concerns over what it describes as political persecution, selective justice and the alleged abuse of state institutions.
The NPP has consistently maintained that the protest is not solely about the party’s grievances but also about protecting Ghana’s democratic institutions, judicial independence and the constitutional rights of all citizens.
Security agencies have announced plans to deploy personnel along the demonstration route to maintain law and order, manage traffic and ensure the safety of demonstrators and the general public throughout the exercise.
