Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aspiring National Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has voiced concern over what he describes as the increasing closeness between Ghana’s Judiciary and the Executive, warning that such a relationship could undermine public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
Speaking on JoyNews ahead of a planned demonstration, Mr. Aboagye said the protest was aimed at drawing national attention to the need to safeguard the independence of the Judiciary.
“I am of the view that we need to keep our judiciary very far away from our politics, far, far, far away from our politics,” he stated.
Mr. Aboagye stressed that his concerns were not politically motivated or based on comparisons with previous administrations, insisting that he was speaking as an ordinary citizen worried about the country’s democratic future.
“I don’t take those excuses of comparisons, those excuses of what was done. I don’t care. I am a citizen. I feel that, as it is happening today, I am worried about it. I want to speak up,” he said.
According to him, the demonstration was intended to send a clear message that the Judiciary must remain independent and free from any perceived influence by the Executive arm of government.
“The 10s and 1000s of people you will be seeing tomorrow on the street are simply saying that the judiciary seems to be romancing with the executive and is making the executive too comfortable,” he remarked.
He further argued that the perceived closeness between the two arms of government was becoming increasingly obvious and making many Ghanaians uneasy.
“I felt uncomfortable that you are looking too close. The proximity within which you seem to be moving around with these people, it’s becoming too blatant,” he added.
Mr. Aboagye maintained that protecting the independence of the Judiciary is essential to preserving the rule of law, constitutional governance and public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
