An overnight downpour has caused flooding in parts of Sandema in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region, leaving roads submerged, disrupting movement, and affecting homes and properties.
The heavy rainfall, which began during the night and continued into the early hours, overwhelmed drainage systems, causing floodwaters to inundate several sections of the town. Among the worst-hit areas is the Chuchuliga–Sandema road, where overflowing drains left portions of the route underwater, making travel difficult for motorists and commuters.
Residents in some low-lying communities also reported that floodwaters entered their homes, damaging household belongings and forcing families to assess the extent of their losses. Although no casualties have been reported, the flooding has caused significant inconvenience to residents and road users.
The incident mirrors previous flooding episodes experienced in Sandema during the rainy season, where intense rainfall has repeatedly overwhelmed drainage infrastructure and submerged key roads, disrupting economic activities and daily life.
Municipal authorities are expected to conduct an assessment of the affected communities to determine the extent of the damage and identify residents who may require assistance. The findings are also expected to guide any emergency response and recovery efforts.
Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling through the affected areas, especially along the Chuchuliga–Sandema road, as waterlogged sections of the road could pose safety risks.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant, particularly as the rainy season continues and further downpours could worsen the flooding situation. The Ghana Meteorological Agency has consistently advised people living in flood-prone areas to stay alert during periods of heavy rainfall and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or drains.
